Winter journey in our home on wheels - Part 4 - Alicante to Calais
We stopped just south of Alicante for a couple of days at a place called La Marina. Beautiful beach there and lovely weather. Simon got to play with the kite for the last time and I practised taking photos of kites!
All too soon it was time to head for the ferry in Calais. We had 5 days to cover around 1250 miles and so had to average around 250 miles a day. We stopped in Zaragoza and found a vet to check the dogs and give them the necessary tapeworm treatment. This has to be done between 1 and 5 days before entering the UK. On our first trip we had it done in France and it was so expensive, 50 euros per dog! This time we paid 40 euros for both dogs! Our last lunch stop in Spain was at an amazing view point overlooking the Parque Natural Bardenas Reales.
Before we knew it we were seeing snow topped mountains and then very snowy mountains and then snow in the fields and at the side of the road! How different to the sunny beach two days ago!
Our last night in Spain was spent at Orio, we had stopped there on the way down for lunch and as we could find nowhere better we stayed in the beach car park for the night. On approaching the car park we followed this sledge being pulled by a couple of cows!
The beach at Orio was very different to when we were here in October. There must have been a big storm as the beach was totally covered in debris, mostly wood, seaweed and litter. It was quite a sight and the sea was black with seaweed for at least 10 metres or so.
We powered through France and I didn't take many photos but we stopped one night at a lovely town called Bonneval, nicknamed the Little Venice of Beauce, it is a medieval town with fortifications and beautiful houses reflected in the waters of the Loir River. I took my camera and strolled around the town in the evening sun taking some pictures.
By the next night we were parked just outside Calais for our ferry the next morning. Here was the view waiting for the ferry!
We got to Dover and headed straight to Gloucester for that night and brrrr didn't we feel the cold! Everyone said it was mild but after 4 months in the South of Spain it didn't feel mild! Anyway that was our trip, hope you enjoyed the blog posts about it. Part 5 is just a run down of how much it all cost and how much mileage we did.
Thanks for looking :) xxx
