Winter journey in our home on wheels - Part 3 - Andalucia to Murcia

After we did some shopping in Gibraltar we headed North along the coast famously known as the Costa del Sol. We don't ever really stop along the stretch between Estepona and Nerja and so for a night we stopped before Estepona at a small beach car park just North of Torreguadiaro. In the morning we drove through the nightmare that is the Costa del Sol! Ok some people like it but it is not our taste at all and it is just too much, beautiful Spanish villages and towns have been ruined by hotels and apartments. This photo sums up why I don't like this area!

We stopped at the cemetery in Malaga to pay our respects to our Uncle Peter who died last year. Peter was a lovely man who we spent some great times with at his little house in the mountains near Alora. We had been looking forward to seeing him on this trip until he was tragically struck down with cancer.

After stopping at the cemetery in Malaga we headed towards Nerja where we stayed for a couple of nights. Although still in the Costa del Sol, Nerja is quite a pretty town without the high rise hotels and apartments although there are plenty of places to stay and it is quite touristy with a large ex-pat community. Luckily when we first arrived here back in 2010 we met a German traveller who showed up a nice out of the way park up. It's one of the few park ups that haven't made it onto the internet yet (unlike Barranco and the Pig field) and so I'm going to keep it that way by not disclosing the location. We went for a nice long walk with the dogs one day down to a secluded little beach and also went near the 19th century Acueducto del Águila (Eagle Aqueduct) as well as passing some lovely little gardens hidden away with no road access.

After a couple of days in Nerja we headed East along the coast to Almeria and then North to Mojacar. We have friends living nearby and we parked up for a while on Macenas beach where the Castillo de Macenas, an 18th-century watchtower is situated. Also on the beach is the Stone of the Nazarene, I had no idea what a Nazarene was and so despite taking a picture of the rock at the time I couldn't really see what I was supposed to see! In case you don't know, a Nazarene is the name given to early Christians or people from
Nazareth.

After a week seeing friends and getting the flu which was awful we headed on North up the coast and into the Murcia region of Spain, we wound up some mountains and back down again and I think this photo was taken pretty much on the border of the Andalucia and Murcia regions.

We stopped for a while at a beach just outside Bolnuevo, there are a series of nudist beaches along this remote coast line and some great places to park up for a while. The nearby town of Puerto de Mazarron has lots of shops and Bolnuevo itself has some interesting things to see including the Ciudad Encantada which are heavily eroded sandstone formations. Pictured below is one of the beaches and the track down to it!

After a few days we knew we had to start going North again and so despite the lovely weather and the pull to stay we hit the road for Alicante, our last stop before the dash for Calais and the ferry!

Part 4 coming soon. Thanks for looking :) xxx
