Conservation land is land where you cannot live or have anything there but land classed as rustic or agricultural you are allowed temporary dwellings and sometimes more permanent structures like sheds. It is not that difficult to get a habitation licence either and in Portugal they are trying to encourage people to live out in the country as all the villages are dying due to young people either emigrating or moving to the cities. So they will keep doing worse and perhaps for a long time to come. If only all of us living on wheels (some wheels as reported in this article is crazy expensive and habituated by really wealthy people dropping loads of money wherever they go) drove up north to where we are welcome. Do not ACCEPT the corrupt southern governments and their idea of forcing us to paid camp sites through nonsensical laws and violence. Go north! You don't have to go far, France is soooo much better and very enjoyable during the winter. Regarding toilet paper, it is common practice in these countries, go anywhere and you will see it. It is mostly there because of women and also in places used for sexual activities. I have seen people in cars turn up and use bushes, or the cover of a van to go toilet. Good luck with your work on this. From what I can make out ...Thanks for your comment. From what I can make out there has been some clarification going on to do with what is parking and what is camping within the highway code. In Portugal these two things are different and as O have stated in a couple of previous posts on this issue parking and sleeping/eating in a campervan overnight or in the day is legal as long as you are legally parked. The definition of camping needs some clarification as it's obvious things like having chairs & tables out or a washing line but more recently it seems just having a window open can be called camping! At the moment there is nothing new to report but the best website I have found is the Campervan Association of Portugal, the CPA, they have good up to date information. Most pages translate automatically using a browser like Google Chrome but some of the PDFs you need to copy and paste into a translator if your not familiar with Portuguese!
https://cpa-autocaravanas.com/Sam Van Dwellerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02841660253667463012noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10054613.post-53754303902139371842020-12-12T16:09:37.284+00:002020-12-12T16:09:37.284+00:00Thank you so much for all your efforts to analyze ...Thank you so much for all your efforts to analyze the situation and inform everyone. Very well written and really informative!! May I ask you if you happen to know if there is/ will be new rules soon regarding wildcamping with a motorhome in Portugal? I read that on the internet but to me it is unclear if the new rules will be any different then the old rules and what the effects will be and I am aware of the fact that the effects could even be different from one region to another region. I already spent quite some hours on the internet investigating but could find a decent source yet. Thanks in advance for your feedback, please keep up the good work and hope you're having a marvellous time in Portugal. The ...Thanks for writing this, some great thoughts. The illusion that some people own the land any more than others is indeed a dangerous school of thought.

I think a flyer or maybe posters / signs on location are a possibility (to be honest I think the latter would be more effective), but also social media is a powerful tool; probably a Facebook and Instagram campaign could help... This could link up to the posters. Honestly, a simple and good start would be a hashtag and Instagram account with clean ups done by wild campers with the location tagged!

Some decent points about tourism and marginalising certain types of tourists (or people) - there's clearly a lot of misconceptions that need to be confronted head on and agreements need to be made between those in vans, locals and the authorities so that everyone can live harmoniously.

The bottom line is that this sort of tourism isn't going away, in fact it's growing! Countries who act hostile and don't accommodate those in vehicles will end up losing out.

The most basic required facilities for those with live in vehicles (waste disposal + fresh water) are neither expensive, complex to build, or difficult to maintain - France would be a great example in action; they see millions of live in vehicles travelling through their country every year and it hugely boosts tourism, particularly in more remote areas.Hamish Blair (hamsarb)https://www.blogger.com/profile/09155966785994199101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10054613.post-54795190133786203232020-04-27T15:38:43.296+01:002020-04-27T15:38:43.296+01:00Totally agree, came off FB a few weeks ago.
